Re: Important E-Bike Safety Information

Dear Families,

The Uxbridge Police Department and Uxbridge Public Schools are reaching out to share important safety information regarding electric bicycles (e-bikes). As e-bikes have grown in popularity among young people, communities across Massachusetts—including our own—have experienced a troubling increase in accidents and injuries involving youth riders.

Tragically, recent months have brought heartbreaking news from neighboring communities, including the deaths of an 11-year-old in Charlton and a 13-year-old in Stoneham in e-bike related crashes. These incidents, along with rising injury rates statewide, have prompted us to take proactive steps to ensure our families have the information they need to make safe choices.

Massachusetts law regarding e-bikes is still evolving, and many parents may not be aware of existing regulations—or the unique risks these powerful devices present. E-bikes can reach speeds of 20 mph or more, far exceeding what most children can safely control. Standard bicycle helmets are only rated for impacts at lower speeds, and many e-bikes sold online do not meet federal safety standards.

Attached to this message, you will find two documents:

1. E-Bike Safety Flyer (click here) — Key facts, Massachusetts law, and practical safety tips for families

2. Joint Safety Message (click here) — A letter from the Superintendent and Chief of Police outlining our shared concerns and recommendations

We ask that you take a few minutes to review these materials and have a conversation with your child about e-bike safety. If your child currently rides an e-bike—or is asking for one—please ensure they understand and follow the safety guidelines, including always wearing an appropriate helmet, obeying all traffic laws, and riding responsibly.

The safety of our students is our highest priority. By working together—schools, police, and families—we can help prevent injuries and keep our young people safe. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the Superintendent's Office or the Uxbridge Police Department.

Thank you for your partnership in keeping our community safe.

Sincerely,

David Ljungberg M.Ed.
